WestPac: 5th Best Workplace for Millennials

WestPac has been named as one of Fortune Magazine’s Best Workplaces for Millennials, landing the 5th place spot. This means millennials really like working at WestPac! Out of more than 4.9 million U.S. employees, our associates gave great feedback about working at WestPac as a millennial, the generation known for appreciating firms with strong values and typically changing jobs frequently.

The millennial generation is the largest yet, including 80 million people in the U.S. and 2.5 billion worldwide. This generation grew up alongside technology and is known for dominating social networks.1 Why do they matter? Millennials became the largest generation in the U.S. labor force in 2016.2 If companies today want to hire and retain top talent as well as provide excellent service, they must treat their millennials right.

Because 80’s and 90’s babies comprise much of the labor force, companies are changing to attract and keep quality millennial team members. WestPac is among the front-runners of those that treat this large workforce well. Frequently when participating in interviews with our CEO Nash Subotic, he will say, "I have a personal mission to help people to go places where they themselves are afraid to go alone so they can reach a potential beyond that which they ever imagined for themselves and their families.” This is a philosophy that we have adopted as a firm. We want to make a difference in the world starting with ourselves, the growing millennial workforce, and expanding our impact from there.

WestPac has also placed a focus on the millennial’s need to connect and be part of a team.3 When surveyed, 96% of our associates considered WestPac a workplace of collaboration where leadership is willing to engage in collective efforts. Additionally, the firm scored just as high in creating a community where associates have the freedom to express themselves in our hospitable workplace environment. Our efforts to build a culture of teamwork and camaraderie is paying off as we make millennials comfortable in their workplace.

Generally, millennials live by a motto that dates to the 1600’s, “All work and no play make Jack a dull boy.” WestPac has taken this to heart by encouraging activities such as escape rooms, spin classes, and, considering recent events, virtual happy hours and scavenger hunts. We understand that life can be stressful, and although we value hard work, we also recognize the desire to not just have work-life balance but even better, work-life integration.

A quarter of the generation says technology makes them unique.4 In fact, WestPac has recently created a robust, completely virtual online onboarding system and database of training, resources, and answers to questions so reps have the information and support they need to be successful right at their fingertips 24/7.
